Map more than the hole
Rust often spreads along seams, overlaps, drains and hidden faces. Record bubbles, staining, distorted seams and nearby mounts. Do not price the repair from the visible hole alone.
Find the structural boundary
Identify whether the area is cosmetic, load-bearing or connected to suspension, steering, restraint, body-mount or seat-belt structure. Stop and use qualified advice when the boundary is unclear.
Compare repair paths
Price a local patch, fabricated section, reproduction panel, donor metal and specialist repair with access, bracing, alignment, welding, finishing and corrosion protection included.
Plan the evidence and coating
Photograph the exposed condition, reference measurements, preparation and finished metal before filler, seam sealer, underbody coating or trim hides the work. Follow the coating maker's preparation and safety data.
Limits and safety
Grinding, welding, coatings, hidden fuel or electrical systems and structural corrosion can create serious fire, fume and vehicle-safety risks. Stop when the work exceeds your controls or competence.
